Museum in Turku

architecture competition | the roof we share

The design concept focuses on the relationship between modernity and history, which manifests in respect for the existing urban fabric while using innovative solutions to set the building in the present. The most essential factor inspiring the concept was the proximity of the Turku Castle – one of the oldest buildings in Finland. Neighbouring the mediaeval symbol of the city, the Museum of History and the Future had to be introduced as a form that would not only abstain from diverting attention but also emphasise the relevance of the castle. To fulfil the following aim, the building is a combination of several interpenetrating volumes. Their positioning about each other shapes the view of the historical landmark. Another tribute to the past is the planned use of concrete accumulated on the site. The act of recycling the old surface layers while constructing a new space out of it may open a dialogue about the memory and identity. Introducing a concept based on cubicles incorporated into a flat volume made it possible to open the building from many sides. It results in a free flow of people on the ground floor. Wide openings and a spacious main lobby set an invitation for the museum visitors and people who are taking part in activities organised inside. One may say that while the museum tells the story of the past and the future, the spaces between the exhibition halls focus on the present. The main hall connects directly with all essential functions gathered inside, making it easier for the users to participate in various events offered by the museum.
